Millennial Myths: Debunked

on

Millennials are weird. Me being one of them, I can contest to this statement. We are always looking for something new, something worth pursuing. We hop around from job to job, we give off the wrong impression to the older generations. There are myths buzzing around about us, and debunkers proving these myths wrong. Some of these myths were laid out in an article I stumbled upon.

  • Millennials’ career goals and expectations are different from those of older generations.
  • Millennials want constant acclaim and think everyone on the team should get a trophy
  • Millennials are digital addicts who want to do—and share—everything online, without regard for personal or professional boundaries.
  • Millennials, unlike their older colleagues, can’t make a decision without first inviting everyone to weigh in.
  • Millennials are more likely to jump ship if a job doesn’t fulfill their passions.

A lot of these myths revolve around the older generations. A man of great knowledge told me once that generations reflect older generations. That “individuals born in the 1980s through to the early 2000s show no material difference in risk tolerance compared with Generation X individuals, those born between the early 1960s and early 1980s” (Article Source).

It’s also interesting to note that we as millennials jump ship from job to job isn’t because we lose interest, most of the time, it’s because we are destined for greater things. We want the best for us and our lives. We do it because we want to enter the fast lane and make something of ourselves.

“…to enter the fast lane, shoot for the top, follow one’s heart or save the world.”

We, as a new generation entering in to the workforce are just reflecting older generations’ behaviors. There’s nothing new about us, just the difference in technology.

We thrive on development, because we are consistent at the job and in our personal life. Any sort of development that a job can offer can benefit us in both worlds, personal and business. If a company finds value in our human capital, we find value in the company. Be the authentic leader brand. Stand for what your values are in every area of your life.
